Chapter 2 - Unity

Chapter 2
 Unity

Unity is a key fundamental for design.  It brings the composition together and creates the design to be harmonious.  It can make a painting flow or bring similarity in the design.
There are 5 ways to create unity in a design.
  • Proximity
  • Repetition
  • Continuation
  • Using a Grid
  • Variety
Proximity demonstrates the bond or closeness/farther away elements are in a design.
The image to the right shows how proximity differs from the shapes on the one side to the shapes on the other.

Repetition characterizes a type of similarity in the elements of the design.  Notice the squares above are all the same size shape and color.

Continuation is a way to join parts of a design together with a line, edge, or direction of the elements to appear continuous or as if all the same line/edge.

Example of Continuation

A Grid is a network of horizontal and vertical lines that intersect to create a frame.  The right side of the image above that was showing proximity shows the pattern of a grid.

Variety creates unity by keeping the design interesting and less "plain looking".  It allows the design to have more shapes, colors, textures, and many other things to enhance the experience of the design.

This image shows a very wide variety of color and shapes.  Curves with straight lines, shades with lights, and textures that all make up this picture.  There is also unity through proximity and if you look at the curves of the hills it appears to have Continuation as well.

Additional Thinks to Know:
  • Gestalt is the visual perception of elements as a whole.
  • Narrative artwork is a design that tells a story.
  • Negative and Positive space are bot important in the design.
