Chapter 6 - Rhythm

Chapter 6

Rhythm

Rhythm in a design is when an element or the whole part give a sense of movement.  It's a way to make the design feel alive or fluid and it gives a different emotion to it when used correctly.

An example is Kin-esthetic Empathy, which is when the design triggers different senses.

Alternating Rhythm is where the same elements in a pattern reappear.
This image to the left is a good representation of this form of rhythm.

Progressive Rhythm is repetition in a shape that changes in a regular manner.
Notice how the glasses below are similar and create a pattern yet the progressively get smaller as you move to the left.

Poly-rhythmic Structure is simply a multi-rythmic design and can give many feelings and show a lot of fluid motions in a single design.

This image demonstrates that by using progressive rhythm through the glasses getting smaller as well as the patterns on the wall and also through the texture and value of the glasses an Alternating Rhythm is seen.
